Chicago Critic John von Rhein on the State of the Arts, Building New Audiences for Classical Music

John von Rhein has been the Chicago Tribune’s classical music critic since 1977.

While the classical music scene in Chicago doesn’t really slow down during the summer, with the Grant Park Music, Ravinia, and other festivals well under way, the main cultural season just ended a few weeks ago.

And it was another very busy season for classical music in Chicago. The 2015/16 season saw a new president at the Chicago Symphony Orchestra Association, a world premiere at Lyric Opera of Chicago, a reopened theater downtown, and smaller classical organizations experienced both great successes and unfortunate conclusions.

To help take stock of the previous season – and the current summer season – we invited John von Rhein, the Chicago Tribune’s classical music critic, to the studio to talk about all of that and more with WFMT Program Director David Polk. Listen to their conversation below.
