Chicago Symphony Orchestra Radio Broadcasts: Truth to Power 2014

Chicago Symphony Orchestra

Chicago Symphony Orchestra

Sunday, February 1, 8, and 15 at 1:00 pm

According to the Chicago Symphony Orchestra’s website, the spring 2014 Truth to Power event offered the opportunity to “celebrate the music of three men who used their art to speak truth to power and united worldwide audiences. It was a time of tremendous tumult; worldwide economic depression and the rise of oppressive regimes in the 1930s led to World War II, during which an estimated 60 million people died. Yet in this dark era, Benjamin Britten, Serge Prokofiev, and Dmitri Shostakovich produced works that stirred nations toward hope and a brighter future. Britten, Prokofiev, and Shostakovich all believed that the artist should serve society by creating music that would inspire justice and fairness.”

These three CSO broadcasts are drawn from Truth to Power; all are led by guest conductor Jaap Van Zweden. Included are Britten’s Violin Concerto and Sinfonia da Requiem; Shostakovich’s Symphony #5 and Symphony #7, subtitled Leningrad; and Prokofiev’s Symphony #5.
