Stolen Jewels on “The Tuesday Night Opera”

statue

Tuesday at 8:00 pm

Peter van de Graaff presents Ermanno Wolf-Ferrari’s Jewels of the Madonna, first performed in Berlin in 1911. The composer once explained his operas tended to be in German due to his having had a German publisher, but an Italian version of Jewels of the Madonna didn’t come out until 1953 due to censorship issues.

The opera takes place in Naples where two youths are vying for the attention of a beautiful maiden. They desecrate a beloved Catholic icon, stealing jewels from an effigy of the Madonna, trying to impress the girl – a topic which scandalized early performances of the opera.

Tuesday’s broadcast features the opera in Italian with Pauline Tinsley, Peter Glossop, and Malcolm King. The BBC Symphony Orchestra and Chorus are conducted by Alberto Erede. Bella Voce BLV-107.242
