The Vienna Philharmonic’s New Year’s Day Concert


This year, Zubin Mehta is the maestro to conduct Strauss waltzes and more in the annual New Year’s concert in Vienna. Recorded earlier in the day at the Musikverein, this concert is so popular, tickets are sold by lottery. Each year, a major conductor is invited to take the podium; last year it was Daniel Barenboim. Thursday’s concert will mark Zubin Mehta’s fifth time taking center stage for this holiday tradition.

Peter presents a discussion and recording of Johann Strauss Jr’s Simplicius, an operetta that takes place at the end of the 30 Years’ War. It’s based on a novel called Adventurous Simplicissimus by HJC von Grimmelhausen. This production stars Michael Volle, Martin Zysset and Piotr Beczala. Franz Welser-Möst conducts the Zurich Opera Orchestra.

A Tchaikovsky Marathon


Tchaikovsky would become one of the most beloved composers in the world; writing the soundtrack for Christmas and 4th of July celebrations (“The Nutcracker” and “1812 Overture”); composing blockbuster concertos, and the foundation of classical ballet.

Bychkov with Chicago Symphony Orchestra


Semyon Bychkov conducts Prokofiev’s Piano Concerto No. 2, Walton’s Symphony No. 1, Poulenc’s Two-Piano Concerto in d; as well as music by John Williams. The soloists are Kirill Gerstein, Katia Labèque and Marielle Labèque.

Marina Rebeka Sings “La traviata” at the Met

The Metropolitan Opera presents Verdi’s La traviata with Marina Rebeka as Violetta, a singer who has headlined a couple Lyric Opera of Chicago productions, including Lyric’s own La traviata. Stephen Costello sings Alfredo and Ludovic Tézier sings Germont. Marco Armiliato conducts the Metropolitan Opera Chorus and Orchestra.

On Wednesday, December 24, WFMT presents carols and traditional Christmas music throughout the day, plus holiday specials from around the world, including King’s College Chapel at Cambridge, and a classic reading of Dickens’s “A Christmas Carol.”

“Bring a Torch!” Christmas with VocalEssence


ohn Birge hosts this Christmas special with the VocalEssence choir, featuring Brubeck’s La Fiesta de la Posada.

This year’s program puts the focus on old French carols, alongside two world premieres in the annual VocalEssence/American Composers Forum Christmas carol contest. The new carols call for the intriguing combination of men’s chorus with English horn.
