WFMT Offers Rossini from the Source

Carmen Romeu as Armida

Carmen Romeu as Armida

Saturday at 12:00 pm

Some Rossini operas are lighthearted. It is possible that Rossini’s comic (opera buffa) style was so successful that audiences overlook the serious side of the composer from Pesaro. That is not a problem in Pesaro.

Over the past decades, members of the community have been deeply immersed in the business of issuing the critical editions of all the Italian master’s works. To reinforce the highest performance standards and celebrate his impressive output, which includes 39 operas, Pesaro also presents the Rossini Opera Festival using a theater where the composer once worked.

In a rare treat, WFMT presents a performance of the Rossini drama, Armida, from the Rossini Opera Festival on this week’s Saturday opera broadcast. Featuring Carmen Romeu in the title role, Randall Bills as Goffredo and Ubaldo; Antonino Siragusa as Rinaldo, and Carlo Lepore as Idraote and Astarotte; Carlo Rizzi conducts the Bologna Teatro Comunale Chorus and Orchestra.
