Ryan Opera Center Sings Puccini, Bizet (video)

LauraJNai

Lyric Opera of Chicago dispatched two of its rising stars to join a worldwide chorus of musicians and music-lovers celebrating music on June 21.

June 21 is the summer solstice, the longest day of the year – and for the past 4 years, a day of music in Chicago. Locally the festival is known as Make Music Chicago, though the summer solstice tradition of taking instruments to the streets started in Paris as the Fête de la Musique.

View these highlights (below) of Make Music Chicago, video of Lyric Opera’s J’Nai Bridges and Laura Wilde performing operatic arias and duets at St. James Cathedral. The pianist is Eric Weimer. Both singers are returning members of Lyric Opera of Chicago’s artist training program, the Ryan Opera Center.

WFMT was at many Make Music Chicago locations across the city on Saturday, presenting live broadcasts from the Evanston campus of the Music Institute of Chicago and St. James Cathedral. WFMT shot video of Sousapalooza and the Rise and Shine Orchestra at Daley Plaza, in addition to video of junior folk musicians from the Old Town School at Wrigley Field, a brass trio at Blu Aqua, and world music at St. James Commons.
