Make Music Chicago 2014 organized dozens of performances at Daley Plaza and across the Chicago area on Saturday. The citywide festival joined communities around the world in celebration of music on June 21, the summer solstice. One of the organizers, Kuang-Hao Huang, announced at 10:00 am,  “Fiji is 17 hours into their day of music. Now it’s time for Chicago to begin.”

Among the events was the Rise and Shine Orchestra conducted by Lloyd Palmiter. Musicians in the Rise and Shine included players from the Chicago Symphony Orchestra: violinists Paul Phillips (playing concertmaster), Nissane Howell, and Blair Milton; cellists Kenneth Olsen and Brant Taylor, and CSO Principal Percussionist Cynthia Yeh. The pick-up ensemble turned out at 9:00 am for a quick rehearsal and a concert at 10:00 am. Rise and Shine was followed by Sousapalooza with CSO Principal Trumpet Christopher Martin and former Principal Clarinet Larry Combs.
