It’s one of those records the die-hard collectors clamored for: Gaetano Donizetti’s Maria Stuarda with Beverly Sills, Eileen Farrell, Stuart Burrows and Louis Quilico. It was recorded for the ABC Audio Treasury series, issued on RCA’s His Master’s Voice, and rapidly went out of print. Getting a copy of this performance became a status symbol among the opera-loving elite.
Happily, it’s been reissued, and WFMT has a copy which Peter van de Graaff has chosen for this week’s edition of The Tuesday Night Opera.
Maria Stuarda, along with Roberto Devereux, and Anna Bolena are often called the “three queens,” and provided roles that helped define the career of Beverly Sills.
