1st Day of Spring: Music, Sunny and 45

Spring.jpg

Spring is here.

This was only the 3rd coldest, and 3rd snowiest winter on record—small consolation to sufferers of potholes, ice, and chill. The new season officially begins on Thursday at 11:57 AM, and WFMT will extend all the joy and gladness that composers can throw at such a welcome occasion.

On Wednesday evening at 10:00 PM, Cedille Chicago begins the celebration with music by Schubert, Dominick Argento, Lita Grier, and one of the most loved spring pieces ever composed, Aaron Copland’s Appalachian Spring.

Then on Thursday at 6:00 AM, Carl Grapentine signs on with “Spring” from Verdi’s Four Seasons ballet. Spring will continue to flower throughout the morning program with Vivaldi, Debussy, Schumann, even a little prime music by Shostakovich. Kerry Frumkin will play Beethoven’s Spring Sonata in the three o’clock hour.

Hear Schubert’s setting of Schiller’s An den Fruhling (To Spring) just before 7:00 AM on Thursday morning.

To Spring
text by Friedrich von Schiller

Welcome, handsome youth!
You delight of nature!
With your basket of flowers,
you are welcome on this meadow!

Hey, hey! you’ve come again!
And you are so dear and handsome!
We rejoice heartily
as we greet you.

Do you also still think about my maiden?
Hey, my friend, you should!
For there my sweetheart loved me,
and the maiden loves me still!

For my sweetheart
I asked for many flowers from you –
I’ve come to ask again;
and you? You grant it.

Welcome, handsome youth!
You delight of nature!
With your basket of flowers,
you are welcome on this meadow!
