Pianist Returns for Hess Concert

hochman

Wednesday at 12:15 PM

Benjamin Hochman made his Chicago Symphony debut sitting beside Trevor Pinnock, and another pianist, in the Mozart Triple Piano Concerto. Pinnock, who was conducting from the piano, is an esteemed keyboard player and early music specialist—one wonders if that’s slightly intimidating for a young player. Nevertheless, Hochman lived to play another day. The Israeli pianist is giving a free recital on Wednesday at 12:15 PM, part of the Dame Myra Hess Memorial concert series, which happens weekly at Chicago’s Cultural Center and airs live on WFMT.

Hochman’s program shows the range of technique that’s come to be associated with this pianist. Wednesday’s concert includes: Baroque, Beethoven, and ‘breaking the mold’—as in, Italian composer Luciano Berio who spent his entire career pushing music’s boundaries.
