Impromptu: Songs of Sondheim

Stephen Sondheim, 1976

Stephen Sondheim, 1976

Tuesday at 4:00 PM

Players from Chicago Shakespeare Theater come to WFMT on Tuesday afternoon for a little live music and conversation with Kerry Frumkin. Continuing until May 4, CST presents the magic of Stephen Sondheim: Gypsy and Road Show.

The mini Sondheim fest is being staged on CST’s mainstage, the 510-seat Courtyard Theater, and in their Upstairs theater, a 200-seat space described as a black box theater, a type of performance space that’s become more popular with theater companies in recent decades (called black box for its typically black walls). In a black box theater, everything in the space is moveable, including the seating and staging, allowing for maximum flexibility in the types of shows that can be staged there. The CST’s mainstage is horseshoe-shaped, and has a thrust stage.

Chicago Shakespeare Theater’s Road Show runs March 13 – May 4. Gypsy closes March 23.
