CSO Plays Mahler 9, A Conductor’s Pilgrimage

Michael Tilson Thomas

Michael Tilson Thomas

CSO broadcast, Sunday at 2:00 PM

It’s been a maestro’s playground. Since Michael Tilson Thomas signed on with the San Francisco Symphony, he’s had a willing partner to fulfill (and fund) his creative whims, not to mention an enthusiastic audience. With them he’s done festivals, radio, television, YouTube. He plunged headlong into a cycle of Mahler symphonies on their own record label, and produced a PBS documentary about Mahler to go with it. According to the conductor, going to the places where Mahler spent his days was a revelation (view a clip below).

On Sunday’s broadcast of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, MTT brings his Mahler sensitivities to one of the great Mahler orchestras for a performance of the autumnal Symphony No.9. The Tribune‘s John von Rhein said the performance ranked among the orchestra’s best. Hear that concert recorded last November.

Sunday’s broadcast includes music by Stravinsky and two canzonas by Giovanni Gabrieli played by members of the CSO brass section.
