Founded by trombone player Paul Von Hoff, Rook gives early music some extra zing, switching out antique instruments, blending flashy virtuosity with musical colors from a distant time. They have a terrific website for the musically curious, including digitized scores of some of their own reconstructions of early music.
Rook’s members Paul Von Hoff, Jeremy David Ward, Mark Shuldiner, and Jakob Hansen all play in other early music and contemporary music ensembles around the Chicago area, but couldn’t resist an opportunity to do something fun and different together.
The Dame Myra Hess Memorial Concerts are free and open to the public each Wednesday at 12:15 PM at Chicago’s Cultural Center. They are broadcast live on WFMT.
