Thursday’s edition of Baroque&Before features performances from the RheinVokal Festival situated in the Middle Rhine Valley. The valley is home to the Lorelei legend, which comes from the murmuring waters echoing around the cliffs. Lorelei is a mythical water sprite, akin to the Rhine maidens.
According to legend, the singing maiden lures men to their deaths on the rocks (indeed the rocks at this narrow turn in the Rhine are a graveyard for river boats)—but what a terrific location for a vocal festival!
Soprano Raquel Andueza and theorbist Jesús Fernández Baena formed La Galanía in 2010. They’ve issued a CD of works by seventeenth century Italian Antonio Cesti. Hear their RheinVokal performance on Baroque&Before with Candice Agree on Thursday at 10:00 PM.
