On Friday, February 7 from 1:00 PM to 4:30 PM, WFMT presents The Midnight Special Pete Seeger Tribute.

Folk music has been integral to WFMT’s identity since its earliest days when Norm Pellegrini said, “Make it so.” Famed Hollywood director Mike Nichols was the host (movies came later); and he partnered with Old Town School founder Win Stracke and Fleming Brown to bring to the airwaves Chicago’s highly charged folk and theater scene—it was indeed a counterculture to McCarthy era hysteria. The sympathy and synergy between WFMT and folk legend Pete Seeger was natural.

When Pete Seeger passed away a little over a week ago, WFMT’s Rich Warren went to work on a tribute, though it’s more than a tribute, it’s a retrospective of our shared histories. Here’s Rich’s description:

The program includes exclusive, rare Pete Seeger concert recordings from our archives, Pete introducing songs excerpted from his interviews with Studs Terkel, songs the folk community has written praising Pete, important cover versions of some of his songs, and Pete even performing a cover of a Bob Dylan song from 1965. We play Pete’s performances of his best-known and loved songs as well as a few of his more obscure songs from his vast output of recordings. Mark Moss, publisher of Sing Out!, the national folk song magazine, provides a remembrance of Pete as well.

Read Rich Warren’s tribute, Remembering Pete.
