Familiar Faces in WFMT Studios

Ryan Singers Before Show

Monday at 6:00 PM

Many opera companies have young artist programs. Lyric Opera’s Ryan Opera Center is becoming one of the most prized placements for a singer because those people actually get to work. The faces of J’nai Bridges, Julia Anne Miller, Emily Birsan, John Irvin etc. have not only been popping up at community concerts, and numerous public events; not to mention having their spot in the Rising Stars concert, but they’ve also been regulars on Lyric’s main stage; singing supporting roles alongside Ana María Martínez, and Joseph Calleja. A year ago Emily Fons sang Nicklausse in Lyric’s Tales of Hoffmann as a Ryan member, and went on to Cherubino at Santa Fe the following summer.

Different training programs pluck their artists at varying stages in their development—Ryan’s singers tend to be fairly well-baked; so getting a spot in the Ryan Opera Center is win-win-win for the artists, for Chicago, and for Lyric: the singers gain invaluable experience from major conductors, directors and the vast resources of a top drawer company; the audience previews artists on their way to big careers; and Lyric continually has access to new talent.

Tune in Monday evening at 6:00 PM for a radio recital with the Ryan Opera Center. Colin Ure hosts.
