Hear the Metropolitan Opera, Saturday at 12:00 PM
Madama Butterfly had its U.S. premiere at the Metropolitan Opera in 1907 with Puccini himself in the audience. Enrico Caruso and Geraldine Farrar sang the leads (truth be told, Puccini thought the voice of Ms. Farrar was too small for Butterly).
On Saturday the Met presents a revival of the Anthony Minghella production from 2006. Chicagoans will know this Cio-Cio-San, Amanda Echalaz sang the role during last fall’s run of Butterfly. Her faithless Pinkerton will be newcomer Bryan Hymel. Take note of Mr. Hymel, he’s scheduled to make his Lyric Opera debut a year from now as Percy in Anna Bolena.
