Three Cellists Back-to-Back

Yo-Yo Ma

Yo-Yo Ma

It’s cello month on WFMT, which means we’re exploring all things related to that soulful, lower member of the strings family: the violoncello. There are many great players, each bringing to the instrument an individual voice. On Wednesday in the one o’clock hour, you’ll have the opportunity to hear three generations of cello players, born about 27 years apart: Alisa Weilerstein, American; born to a family of musicians in 1982;  Yo-Yo Ma, also American, born in Paris in 1955; and the Russian virtuoso Mstislav Rostropovich, born in 1927, died in 2007. Wednesday’s cello hour features all three playing music by Tchaikovsky.

Congratulations to the entire WFMT Radio Network team on this totally amazing NEH grant. The Network, and especially the indefatigable Tony Macaluso, have performed and with this grant will continue to perform the enormously important work of keeping Studs’ work and spirit alive. Hats off!
