Reflections: Claudio Abbado

Claudio Abbado (1933-2014)

Claudio Abbado (1933-2014)

Italian Maestro Claudio Abbado declined his salary; he had been honored with the title Senator for Life, an appointment to Italy’s upper house of parliament. He accepted the post, but wouldn’t accept compensation, redirecting the funds to music education. That was typical of how he lived his life which ended on Monday after outliving his doctors’ dire predictions by about fifteen years. Claudio Abbado continually found ways to leverage his success on the podium to the greater good, whether it meant bringing music to people in hardship or conducting youth orchestras. He was a favorite in Chicago; loved by the musicians as well as the audience. His recordings with the CSO continue to be favorites among the orchestra’s diehard fans.

More on Claudio Abbado.

Wednesday afternoon between 4:00 PM and 7:00 PM, Suzanne Nance will feature several of Abbado’s recordings; one with oboist Ray Still playing the Mozart Oboe Concerto. Suzanne will also play the Beethoven 4th Piano Concerto which Abbado recorded with Maurizio Pollini and the Berlin Philharmonic; and a Berlin Philharmonic recording of the Beethoven 2nd Symphony.
