“…when Garanča and Stoyanova sang together, they were perfect. The Rex tremendae simply gave me shivers.”

WFMT presents the Verdi Requiem on Sunday’s broadcast from the Salzburg Festival with Riccardo Muti at the head of an orchestra he’s known his entire career, the Vienna Philharmonic. Soloists include Krassimira Stoyanova, Elīna Garanča, Piotr Beczala, and Dmitry Belosselskiy. Of the four, Krassimira Stoyanova is best known to Chicago’s audiences; she sang Amelia in Lyric’s Simon Boccanegra, and Desdemona in the CSO’s Otello. When first heard in Chicago, Lawrence A. Johnson of Chicago Classical Review said, “Stoyanova’s Willow Song was heart-breaking, the Ave Maria beautifully rendered and almost unbearably poignant in the soprano’s feather-light pianissimos.”

The 2013 Salzburg Festival offered the Verdi Requiem in honor of Verdi’s 200th. Hear the broadcast Sunday at 5:00 PM. The broadcast is produced by WFMT, Carolyn Paulin producer.
