Carl Returns to WFMT’s Morning Show

Carl in Studio

WFMT’s morning host Carl Grapentine returned to the airwaves on Monday after having been a casualty of winter weather (a spill on the ice). Carl couldn’t resist taking a poke at himself, playing a movement from Richard Strauss’s wind sonata From an Invalid’s Workshop, a work Strauss composed when his own health was in decline. Carl chuckled, “It was nice to be at home, but the fascination wore off.”

During Monday’s program Carl touched on a couple composer birthdays missed while he was away, as well as some of his favorite holiday music (that’s Carl!).

    Re: Abbado and Mahler #7
    Dear Carl,
In the middle 1980s our younger son, Dirk, asked just before he arrived home during winter break from graduate school in Colorado, if we could get tickets for a CSO concert. Fortunately, a few tickets were available for a performance of Abbado conducting Mahler’s 7th. This was not part of our regular, series, so we were fortunate to find 3 seats in the front row close enough that we could almost read Frank Miller’s score. Dirk was not, and still is not a close adherent of classical music, but this performance almost blew him, and us away. We have fond memories of this happy time!

So glad you are well on the way to recovery from the, um, structural damage. The best you can do is be patient and heed your physical therapist!

Thank you for all you do!
