Total immersion.

That seems to be the philosophy of the Avalon Quartet. A couple seasons ago they played all sixteen Beethoven quartets. This year they’re playing the six Bartoks.

Resident at Northern Illinois University, the Avalons split their time between DeKalb and Chicago, also giving their concerts at the Art Institute. On January 12, they present the 4th Bartok Quartet at AIC.

Listen to the Avalons discuss this evolution in Beethoven’s Rasumovsky quartets:

Tune in for the Impromptu, WFMT’s live in-studio concert series, on Thursday at 3:00 PM. The program includes music and conversation with host Kerry Frumkin.
