As people around the world remember where they were, what they were doing the moment they heard the news of Kennedy’s assassination, one Englishman, our WFMT colleague Jon Tolansky offered this:
Last year, Jon had produced a WFMT documentary on the Austrian-American conductor Erich Leinsdorf. As it happens, Maestro Leinsdorf was on the podium when news broke of that shooting in Dallas. It was a concert being broadcast live of the Boston Symphony. Jon acquired the tape of that concert for the Leinsdorf documentary, and spoke with one of the musicians. The program aired on WFMT in the summer of 2012.
50 years ago, on November 22, 1963, the Boston Symphony broke for intermission; the music librarian passed out parts to the funeral march from the Eroica Symphony. Here is Jon Tolansky with a recording of what they heard:
