Did you know that Labor Day started in Chicago?

4,000 workers walked off the job at the Pullman Company in May of 1894; over the summer, the dispute spread across the United States leading to a widespread boycott of any train pulling a Pullman car.

A federal court ordered strikers back to work. The dispute turned violent when troops were deployed to enforce the order; 30 workers lost their lives, and another 57 were wounded. Property damage was estimated to have exceeded $80 million. Six days after the strike ended, President Grover Cleveland and the U.S. Congress declared a national holiday in honor of American workers.
