Paulus: Voices from the Gallery

July 17 10:00 AM

American composer Stephen Paulus (who was an on-air host in May on WFMT) composed this after 11 great works of art. In it, the art works “speak” to the listener through a narrator with texts by Joan Vail Thorne: 1) “The Winged Victory of Samothrace” by an anonymous Greek artist 2) Grant Wood’s “American Gothic” 3) Hieronymous Bosch’s “The Garden of Earthly Delights” 4) Velazquez’ “Infanta Margarita” 5) Picasso’s “She Goat” 6) Marcel Duchamps’ “Nude Descending a Staircase” 7) Botticelli’s “The Birth of Venus” 8) Leonardo da Vinci’s “Mona Lisa” 9) Pieter Brueghel’s “The Beggars” 10) Andrew Wyeth’s “Christina’s World” 11) Renoir’s “Dance at Bougival.”

Wonderful narrator. I turned it on midway through, not knowing what I was listening to. It was an intriguing puzzle to figure out that it was famous pictures talking! Very enjoyable ride home listening to this.
