Hear Tuesday’s Rush Hour Concert at 5:54 PM
A generation ago, few Americans could identify a pipa. It still doesn’t pass spell-check, though westerners are coming around. Yo-Yo Ma’s Silk Road Project has been wildly successful, and one of those Silk Road virtuosos, a pipa player named Yang Wei, lives and works in Chicago.
The pipa is a lute-like instrument which has long been used in Hollywood for music of an Asian flavor. But now, Yang Wei is taking it to the people, making appearances at Ravinia, The Late Show with David Letterman, Good Morning America, and on Tuesday’s Rush Hour Concert. Yang Wei, one of the top pipa players anywhere, has made it his life’s work to share his instrument with the West.
Tuesday’s concert presents a fusion of musical styles and artists from the Chicago and Milwaukee Symphonies, as well as composer/guitarist Jason Seed. The 5:45 PM concert takes place at St. James Cathedral and is broadcast live on 98.7 WFMT.
