Mussorgsky: Pictures at an Exhibition
July 1, 9:00 AM
After the death of his good friend Viktor Hartmann in 1873, Mussorgsky attended a retrospective of Hartmann’s art work and was inspired to write a 10 movement suite for piano. This has famously been orchestrated many times. It is the most famous, the Maurice Ravel orchestration, that we feature as our first art-inspired work in this “Art and Music Month” on WFMT.
Shown are the surviving works by Hartmann known to have been Mussorgsky’s source for the suite.
