Mussorgsky: Pictures at an Exhibition

July 1, 9:00 AM

After the death of his good friend Viktor Hartmann in 1873, Mussorgsky attended a retrospective of Hartmann’s art work and was inspired to write a 10 movement suite for piano. This has famously been orchestrated many times. It is the most famous, the Maurice Ravel orchestration, that we feature as our first art-inspired work in this “Art and Music Month” on WFMT.

Shown are the surviving works by Hartmann known to have been Mussorgsky’s source for the suite.

We’ve heard “Pictures at an Exhibition” for decades; now, thanks to WFMT and Noel Morris, we can see the pictures exhibited at that exhibition.

We can almost hear Adolph Herseth’s trumpet singing the “promenade,” as our eyes move from picture

    to picture.

I can’t wait to look at these photos while listening to Pictures at an Exhibition. Thanks for posting!
