At the age of 5, Austrian pianist Rudolf Buchbinder set the record for being the youngest student ever admitted to the Vienna Musik Hochschule. Early in his career, he recorded all the Beethoven sonatas and piano concertos; recently he recorded them all again—the concertos with the Vienna Philharmonic, for which he serves as both conductor and pianist (to be released in October on Sony Classics).
When CSO regular Leif Ove Andsnes stepped down from his Chicago concerts due to the early arrival of baby twins, Buchbinder stepped in; he’s in town for a much anticipated Beethoven 4th Piano Concerto with Riccardo Muti and the Chicago Symphony. Although Buchbinder is a regular on WFMT air, his sonatas cycle was recently featured on WFMT’s The New Releases; Thursday will be his first appearance with the CSO.
