Back when I was first listening to WFMT, the “Columbia Symphony Orchestra” — because it never gave concerts and had no real roster of musicians — was simply referred to by announcers as “Orchestra conducted by…” Occasionally, Don Tait would note that the “Columbia Symphony Orchestra” was — if conducted by a New York-based musician lke Bernstein — made up largely of Metropolitan Opera personnel, and if conducted by a West Coast-based musician, consisted of players from the LA Philharmonic. Bruno Walter conducted both groups, the former in the fifties and the latter in the early sixties.
