Vocal virtuoso Bryn Terfel is the guest on Best of Studs Terkel, Friday at 10:00 PM.
When the word “virtuosity” is mentioned, one thinks most often of flying fingers on a keyboard or fingerboard or a coloratura soprano’s negotiation of some high, fast passage; and those examples certainly apply. But virtuosity is also to be found in the orchestral colors found by Ravel and Rimsky-Korsakov; in the brilliant and unexpected key modulations through the “Chaos” portion of Haydn’s Creation, and in the profound development passages in a Beethoven piano sonata, or a Bach fugue. There could even be an element of virtuosity in the best orchestra’s playing of the soft opening of Sibelius’ Violin Concerto. Virtuosity is everywhere in classical music and we’ll be exploring it and dazzling our listeners with it throughout the month of March.
