How often do we have the opportunity to be in on the ground floor of a new orchestral piece? Yesterday I went with CSO Composer-in-Residence Mason Bates to Fermilab, where he collected sounds for his new piece “Alternative Energy.” Scheduled to premiere in February of 2012, Mason began preparing at least part of his score: prerecorded sounds from places in Chicago.
