What does busy mean at WFMT?
One could argue that all radio stations are always busy. Broadcasting happens 24/7, after all, and running a radio station sometimes feels like laying down tracks ahead of a speeding train even in the “slowest” of months! Music is selected, announcers and spots ordered, and guests are booked months in advance.
But at WFMT, busy means producing new documentaries, series from around the world and, most of all, live programming! A live broadcast includes the listener in the very act of creation, and we think that’s important.
Since staff members are all working on multiple projects at once, we sometimes aren’t aware of the big picture until operations manager Don Mueller sends out his monthly list of all live events occurring the following month. And this month we were all pleasantly surprised that October, 2010 will end up being one of the busiest months in WFMT’s history:
- 16 live remote broadcasts in the local area.
- 13 from the Levin studio.
- 4 Guest host segments.
- 1 Impromptu Live from Los Angeles.
- 1 Live broadcast from Quebec City, Canada
- 1 Live broadcast from Warsaw, Poland
Total of 35 LIVE broadcasts in 31 days! Were busy and we love it. And that’s not including new documentaries, tape-delayed broadcasts (concert is taped and then aired soon after), series (including programs featuring the CSO, NY Phil, and others), and more.
Below is our October schedule of live events. Of course, live radio is unpredictable sometimes and so this schedule is very much subject to change.
