Dowland: Melancholy Galliard (2:20); Mrs Winter’s Jump (1:39); King of Denmark, His Galliard (2:26)

Joe Brent, mandolin; Alon Sariel, lute

John Dowland used some of his melodies in pieces for variable settings and instrumentations. For instance the song “Can She Excuse” is found in four different versions. This creative practice is revived on this recording. Joe Brent and Alon Sariel play the pieces on their instruments in different duo settings, following an arrangement manner of the late Renaissance that brings Dowland’s manuscripts back to life. The pieces can be heard on mandolin and lute, two mandolins, as well as a ten string mandolin and a mandola.
