Emanuel Ax offers a new recording of significant sets of variations by four different composers: Haydn, Beethoven, Schumann and Copland. Ax believes that the form is a great composer’s way of showing consummate artistry. He points out that each work is unusual, “each revolutionary in its own way.” Ax also discovered that they go very well together in a concert program.
