2017 Crain-Maling Foundation Chicago Symphony Orchestra Young Artists Competition Winners

cso competitionOn Saturday’s broadcast, we feature the winners of the 2017 Crain-Maling Foundation Chicago Symphony Orchestra Young Artists Competition.

For decades, the Chicago Symphony Orchestra has held a competition in order to give the opportunity of a lifetime to a young musician: the ability to perform with the CSO. The competition rotates instrumentation every three years with strings, woodwinds/brass/percussion, and piano. This year featured string instruments, and for the first time in competition history, the finalists were accompanied by the Civic Orchestra of Chicago under the direction of Erina Yashima.

The first-runner up was 17-year-old violinist Joshua Brown of Gurnee, and the winner was 16-year-old violinist Maya Anjali Buchanan of Evanston. Maya will have the opportunity to perform with the CSO during a children’s concert in the 2017/18 season.
