Devon Naftzger, a junior at Stevenson High School, studies viola with Desiree Ruhstrat at the Music Institute of Chicago. Devon has played the violin since age 5, but last summer, at 15, she switched to the viola. She has received awards from: Society of American Musicians (SAM) Viola Senior Division, Walgreens Concerto Competition’s Early Music Category, North Suburban Symphony’s Concerto competition, Rami Solomonow Merit Scholarship winner, and Music Institute of Chicago Merit Scholarship Recipient. In addition, Devon performs in the Midwest Young Artists Symphony Orchestra in Highwood, IL and was principal viola on the 2010 Germany Tour. With MYA, Devon participates in the early and new music ensemble, the Symphony orchestra, and a string quartet. She has also soloed with CSO’s Charlie Pikler’s I Solisti chamber orchestra. Devon enjoyed participating in the Aspen Music Festival this past summer. One of her favorite musical memories is getting to play the National Anthem at Wrigley Field for a Cubs game.
