The bandoneon is not an accordion, but a type of big concertina particularly popular in Argentina and Uruguay. It is an essential instrument in tango groups, and in orchestras from the traditional orquesta típicas of the 1910s onwards to the present day. The bandoneon, so named by the German instrument maker and dealer Heinrich Band (1821–1860), was originally intended as an instrument for religious music and popular music of the day. By the 1880’s a model already outdated was exported to Río de la Plata and sold cheaply in the music stores of Buenos Aires and Montevideo. Oddly enough, these outdated instruments became the main voice of tango, the quintessential urban music from these twin cities across the river Río de la Plata.
