One of the foremost Chilean composers, Juan Orrego-Salas (b. 1919)  co-founded the Latin American Music Center at Indiana University, Bloomington. Here, the first director of LAMC speaks about its founding: Orrego-Salas and LAMC.

   Estimado Sr. Barilari:

   Thank you so much for showing (segments of)our music on your fine Sunday’s program. As a Chilean born, I was most happy to finally hear the name of one of my favorite compatriots showcased when you did the program on Juan Orrego Salas. As a member of the Coro de la Universidad de Chile, I sang some of his beautiful pieces. In our choir we also sang pieces by Gustavo Becerra, Alfonso Letelier, Fernando Garcia, Leon Schidlowsky, Leng and other composers that escape my mind. We used to attend/participate in the music bienal sponsored by the Instituto de Extension Musical de la Universidad de Chile, under the aegis then of Gustavo Becerra. Of course, I’m talking about the pre-Pinochet years. Becerra died recently in exile in Germany; Schidlowsky is in Israel, Garcia went to exile in Cuba, returning to Chile after the Plebiscite.
   Would it be possible for you to present some of their music sometime? Let me know if I can be of any assistance.

   Hola Sonia,

   gracias por tu generoso e mail!
   Salvo varios CD’s de Orrego, no tengo musica de ninguno de los compositores que mencionas. Los conozco a todos, su musica, digo, pero no me ha sido facil, para nada, conseguir grabaciones de musica chilena.
   Tu tienes?
   Si me puedes quemar CD’s or mandarme mp3 seria genial.
   Mejor aun si mi productora y yo podemos tener acceso a los discos originales y bajrlos a la computadora de la radio, la calidad es mucho mejor cuando copiamos del oroginal.
   Te cuento que yo vivi en Chile durante todo el 91, un periodo muy interesante, debor decir.
   Vivia en las Torres San Borja, Alameda y Portugal…
