Critical Thinking: Susan Nussbaum

goodkingsbadkingsnussbaum

Andrew talks with Chicago playwright and longtime disability rights activist Susan Nussbaum about her award-winning first novel Good Kings Bad Kings, recently issued in paperback.

  • This is such an insightful conversation with seasoned artist-activist Susan Nussbaum. I’m so grateful the interviewer allowed her the room to open up and articulate some of the many narrative strands—historical, cultural, political; of voice, of memory, of craft—that went into the shaping of this first novel. Can’t wait to see where her efforts take her next!

Andrew, thank you so much for your insightful interview with Susan Nussbaum. Time does not allow me to read as many of the interesting books out there as I would like, but you spurred me to search out this one. It is a gem! Susan’s experience writing plays shows clearly in the engaging dialogue-narratives of her assorted characters. I do not have firsthand experience in the world of which she writes; but the realistic, believable utterances of her characters compel me to think, “Yes, that must be how it really is.”
